Thailand compared with Taiwan: area, population and density

Thailand has over fourteen times Taiwan’s land area but fewer than three times its population, resulting in a much lower national density.

Direct answer

How different are Thailand and Taiwan?

Thailand covers 513,139.5 km²; Thailand's area is 14.2 times Taiwan's. Its reported population is 65,951,210; Thailand's population is 2.82 times Taiwan's. By average density, Thailand's population density is about 19.9% of Taiwan's.

Area difference

Population difference

Thailand's population is 2.82 times Taiwan's 65,951,210 · 23,400,220

Density difference

On a familiar scale

  • Thailand ≈ 173.8 × Kaohsiung City 7,781 m² of land per resident
  • Taiwan ≈ 12.3 × Kaohsiung City 1,547 m² of land per resident

Reference scales come from Department of Household Registration, Ministry of the Interior: Land area, households and population density by township and district (year-end 2025) , as of 2025-12-31.

How to read it

Thailand’s long north–south geography and broad interior make it a poor fit for judging travel distance from area alone.

Geography and shape

Thailand extends from the northern mainland to the narrow Malay Peninsula and includes many coastal islands. Taiwan is much more compact around one main island. The common-scale outline reveals both the area gap and the different shape of travel corridors.

Population context

Thailand has far more land per resident. Its population is several times Taiwan’s, while its territory is more than fourteen times as large, so the national average density is only a fraction of Taiwan’s.

Boundaries and definitions

Both figures cover complete national territories. Thailand uses year-end 2024 registered population and area from its 2025 statistical yearbook; Taiwan uses year-end 2024 registered population and official administrative land area.

In-depth guide

How should Thailand and Taiwan be understood in context?

Thailand is one of the places most frequently reached by travellers departing Taiwan, but its geographic scale is easy to underestimate. It has more than fourteen times Taiwan’s land while its population is fewer than three times as large.

A long country with distinct travel regions

Northern Thailand, the central plain, the northeast, the Gulf coast and the Andaman coast sit far apart inside one national outline. A Bangkok or island holiday shows only one part of that territory.

Taiwan is also elongated, but its main-island scale is far more compact. The common outline clarifies why domestic travel distances in Thailand cannot be estimated from a familiar Taiwan itinerary.

More people, much more land

Thailand’s registered population is much larger than Taiwan’s, yet the land multiplier is several times greater than the population multiplier. That arithmetic produces a substantially lower national density.

Bangkok’s intensity and busy resort centres do not contradict the national result. Averages include mountains, farms, forests and lightly settled provinces.

Move from country to island carefully

The national page is the right answer for Thailand as a whole. Questions about Koh Samui need a separate island outline and local population note, which Atlas provides as another geographic level.

Country and island figures should never be mixed simply because the island belongs to Thailand. Every title, outline and number must point to the same object.

Questions people ask

About this geographic comparison

How many Taiwans fit inside Thailand?

Using the official figures on this page, Thailand is a little over fourteen times Taiwan’s land area.

Why is Thailand less dense than Taiwan?

Thailand’s land grows by a much larger multiple than its population, leaving more national territory per resident on average.

Does Thailand include Koh Samui?

Yes. The national total includes Koh Samui and other Thai islands. Atlas also provides island-level Koh Samui comparisons.
