On a familiar scale

  • Incheon ≈ the size of Changhua County (reference rung) 350 m² of land per resident
  • Taipei City ≈ 1.79 × Kinmen County (reference rung) 111 m² of land per resident

Reference scales come from Department of Household Registration, Ministry of the Interior: Land area, households and population density by township and district (year-end 2025) , as of 2025-12-31.

How to read it

Incheon’s territory reaches far out into the Yellow Sea to include island counties most people picturing “Incheon” never think of, which is most of why the area gap with compact Taipei City is this wide.

Geography and shape

Incheon Metropolitan City is built around South Korea’s main international airport and container port on the Yellow Sea, but its administrative territory also includes Ganghwa and Ongjin counties — a scatter of islands running from Ganghwa near the mainland out to Baengnyeong, close to the North Korean maritime border. Taipei City has no offshore territory at all. Comparing the two full administrations, rather than just Incheon’s urban core, is what produces nearly a fourfold area gap.

Population context

Incheon’s population is about 1.25 times Taipei City’s, spread across land about 3.94 times as large, giving an average density of about 2,854 per km² against Taipei City’s roughly 8,976 — Taipei runs a little over three times denser. Both are city-proper figures and exclude each city’s much larger surrounding metropolitan area; Incheon together with Seoul and Gyeonggi Province forms the Seoul Capital Area, home to roughly half of South Korea’s population.

Boundaries and definitions

Incheon’s figures are resident registration population (주민등록인구) and official administrative area, both at 2025-12-31, from the same Ministry of the Interior and Safety report already used for Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong and Busan — a different population series from the Statistics Korea register-based census the South Korea and Seoul pages use, though usually close. Taipei City uses household registration at 2025-12-31. Incheon’s outline is drawn from GADM 4.1, not OpenStreetMap or Natural Earth, both of which fail this site’s land-outline bar for Incheon — see docs/island-data-sources.md — and it does include Ganghwa, Yeongjong and the outer Ongjin islands.

Incheon: Incheon Metropolitan City's full administrative territory, including Ganghwa and Ongjin counties' many offshore islands, which the official area and population figures already count. Population is resident registration population (주민등록인구) as at 2025-12-31, from the same Ministry of the Interior and Safety annual report used for Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan, Sejong and Busan — a different series from the Statistics Korea register-based census (등록센서스) that the South Korea and Seoul pages use, though the two series are usually close. Area is this same report's official administrative-area figure at 2025-12-31, not a figure computed from the map outline. 🔴 Both wired geometry sources fail this site's land-outline bar for Incheon, previously documented in docs/island-data-sources.md: OpenStreetMap's administrative relation encloses about 9,886 km² (+824%, a maritime jurisdiction boundary far out into the Yellow Sea) and Natural Earth's feature measures about 367 km² (−66%, omitting the Ganghwa and Yeongjong island groups). The outline instead uses GADM 4.1's Incheon polygon, which measures about 1,097 km² against the 1,069.56 km² official figure (+2.5%) — within the tolerance already accepted for Macao and Singapore on this site, and it does include Ganghwa, Yeongjong and the other island groups (its bounding box reaches Baengnyeong Island near the North Korean maritime border). GADM is licensed for non-commercial use only; Atlas is not commercialised. See docs/island-data-sources.md.

Taipei City: Taipei City, the special municipality alone. Area and registered population come from the same Ministry of the Interior table at the same year-end 2025 reference date, so the density is like for like. The figure excludes New Taipei City: “Taipei” in everyday speech often means the two cities together (2,324.3664 km², 6,484,338 residents) or the wider metropolitan area, which has no single official boundary. Population is household registration, not resident presence.

In-depth guide

How should Incheon and Taipei City be understood in context?

Most people picture Incheon as an airport and a port on the Yellow Sea. Its administrative territory also runs far out to sea, through Ganghwa and Ongjin counties, to island groups closer to North Korea than to central Seoul — which is most of the reason it covers nearly four times Taipei City’s compact, landlocked land.

A city that includes a maritime border

Incheon’s Ongjin County alone administers islands scattered across the Yellow Sea, the furthest of which, Baengnyeong Island, sits closer to North Korea than to any part of mainland Incheon. Ganghwa County, nearer the coast, adds another large island connected by bridge. None of this shows up if a map draws only the mainland urban districts around the airport and port — which is exactly what happened with the Natural Earth source this site tried and rejected for Incheon before GADM 4.1.

Taipei City, by contrast, has no offshore territory of any kind. So this comparison is not "airport city versus capital" in any everyday sense — it is a maritime metropolitan administration, islands included, against a landlocked river-basin city. The nearly fourfold area gap should be read with that difference in mind, not as a statement about how built-up either place feels.

What the density gap does and does not say

Taipei City’s average density runs a little over three times Incheon’s. Almost none of that gap comes from Incheon’s urban core being sparse — Songdo, Yeonsu and the districts around the old port are themselves dense — it comes from dividing the city’s population by a land area that includes island counties most residents never visit. Reading the ratio as "Incheon is empty" would be as wrong as reading Busan’s hills that way.

Incheon’s population figure is the same resident-registration series used for Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan and Sejong on this site, at the same 2025-12-31 reference date as its area figure — a scope-consistent pair, even though the outline needed GADM 4.1 to draw the islands the number always included.

Questions people ask

About this geographic comparison

Which is bigger, Incheon or Taipei City?

Incheon is bigger, with a land area about 3.94× that of Taipei City (1,069.6 vs 271.8 km²).

How do Incheon and Taipei City differ in area, population and density?

Incheon is 3.94× the size of Taipei City — 1,069.6 km² vs 271.8 km². Population is 1.25× higher; average density is 31.8% as high. Each side’s scope and reference date are set out under “Boundaries and definitions” on this page.

Does Incheon’s area include its outlying islands?

Yes. The official figure and the drawn outline both cover Ganghwa and Ongjin counties’ islands, out to Baengnyeong near the North Korean maritime border — not just the mainland urban districts around the airport and port.

Why did Incheon not have an Atlas page before?

Its outline did. OpenStreetMap’s administrative relation for Incheon encloses a maritime jurisdiction boundary at roughly 9.2 times its true land area, and Natural Earth’s feature omits the Ganghwa and Yeongjong island groups, undercounting by about two-thirds. A GADM 4.1 polygon measuring within about 2.5% of the official figure, and including those islands, resolved this in September 2026.
