Taipei City is “how many times” what?
The multiples on this site default to Taiwan. Pick a place you know and the area, population and density are recalculated against it; your choice is remembered in this browser and carries to other pages.
Taipei City, the special municipality alone. Area and registered population come from the same Ministry of the Interior table at the same year-end 2025 reference date, so the density is like for like. The figure excludes New Taipei City: “Taipei” in everyday speech often means the two cities together (2,324.3664 km², 6,484,338 residents) or the wider metropolitan area, which has no single official boundary. Population is household registration, not resident presence.
Average administrative density does not describe population distribution in every neighborhood. Compare population definitions and reference dates alongside the numbers.
Place guide
How should this Taipei City profile be read?
Taipei City covers 271.7997 km² and holds 2,439,507 registered residents as at 2025-12-31, the densest of Taiwan’s 22 cities and counties at about 8,975 people per km². The number is only unambiguous once it is clear which "Taipei" is meant.
Three different "Taipei"s
This page measures Taipei City alone, the special municipality: 271.7997 km² and 2,439,507 people. Everyday speech often means Taipei City plus New Taipei City, which together cover 2,324.3664 km² and hold 6,484,338 people — 8.6 times the area. A third sense, the Taipei metropolitan area, is a statistical and commuting concept with no single official boundary, so no area figure is quoted for it here.
Seeing "Taipei has 2.4 million people" and "Taipei has 6.5 million people" in two sources is therefore not a contradiction; the two are measuring different ground. Any ratio taken from this page — how many Taipeis fit inside another place — uses the city-only figure.
Area and population share one table and one date
Both figures come from the same Ministry of the Interior table, "Land area, households and population density by township and district", at year-end 2025 (ROC 114). Because the boundary and the reference date match, the density printed here is a like-for-like division rather than two sources stitched together.
The population is household registration, not measured presence. People who live abroad long term but keep their household registration in Taipei are counted; people who work in Taipei while registered in another city are not. Daytime population in the central districts is therefore considerably higher than this figure implies.
The denominator also includes Yangmingshan National Park and the hill country in Nangang and Wenshan, which almost nobody lives on, so 8,975 describes the whole municipality rather than how crowded any particular street feels.
Also a rung on the Taiwan reference ladder
Taipei City is one of the ten rungs this site uses to make unfamiliar sizes legible: 227 km² against Taiwan’s 36,197 km² reads as "0.6%", which nobody can picture, while "about eight tenths of Taipei" can be pictured immediately. Now that Taipei City is also a full place, the ladder marks the rung so it is never used to measure itself — a page reading "Taipei City ≈ one Taipei City" would be true and useless.
