Outline of Bali Province
The outline is fitted to this frame, not a map for measuring distances. Outlying islands may make the main landmass appear smaller.

Scope and definitions

Bali Province, not the main island alone. The area is the province's statutory land area, the sum of all 57 districts across its eight regencies and one city as fixed in the 2023 provincial spatial plan; it excludes the 9,152.54 km² of coastal waters the same plan assigns to the province. The population is the provincial figure for 2025, so the density shown is provincial. The province is larger than the main island because it also administers Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, Menjangan and Serangan — Nusa Penida district alone is 209.02 km², about 3.7% of the land. No Indonesian government body publishes a land area for the main island on its own, and figures circulated as the area of Pulau Bali are provincial totals under an island label. Official provincial areas also disagree by source, from 5,590.01 to 5,780.06 km²; this page names the basis it uses. The outline drawn here is the main island's coastline, because the mapped provincial boundary includes territorial waters and encloses roughly 21,000 km². Area and population are about two years apart.

Average administrative density does not describe population distribution in every neighborhood. Compare population definitions and reference dates alongside the numbers.

Place guide

How should this Bali Province profile be read?

The figures here are provincial: 5,590.01 km² of land and 4,461,270 people, about 798 per km². The outline is the main island alone, and the official area itself depends on which body is asked.

Four official areas for one province

The 5,590.01 km² used here is the land area in the 2023 provincial spatial plan, the sum of 57 districts across eight regencies and one city. The same plan assigns the province a further 9,152.54 km² of coastal waters, which is excluded. Other official values are about 5,594.68 km² from the geospatial agency, 5,636.66 km² as a legacy figure and 5,780.06 km² from the statistics agency.

Density swings from about 765 to about 798 per km² depending on which area is chosen, so the basis is named rather than left implicit. The 2025 population and the 2023 area are also about two years apart.

Province, island and outline

The province also administers Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, Menjangan and Serangan. Nusa Penida district alone is 209.02 km², about 3.7% of the provincial land, and no Indonesian body publishes an area for the main island on its own.

The drawn outline is the main island’s coastline, because the mapped provincial boundary includes territorial waters and encloses roughly 21,000 km². Area and population therefore describe the province while the shape describes the island, and both should be read with that in mind.
