Why the area roughly doubled in 2023
Daegu annexed neighbouring Gunwi County in July 2023, adding roughly 614 km² of mostly rural land. Official tables published since then carry the combined figure; tables from before the annexation, or figures copied from an outdated source, will still show Daegu at about 884 km².
Population did not jump by nearly as much, because Gunwi County is sparsely settled. The net effect of the merger is therefore a large drop in Daegu’s average density rather than a large rise in its population.
