Which area: land, not jurisdiction

The 1,892,410.09 km² used here is the 2022 sum of provincial administrative land areas fixed by Minister of Home Affairs Decree 100.1.1-6117/2022 and reproduced on page 52 of BPS-Statistics Indonesia’s Environment Statistics of Indonesia 2023. It excludes territorial sea, archipelagic waters and the exclusive economic zone. Because the decree carries only its year, the area date is shown as year-end 2022.

Much larger figures circulate for Indonesia because an archipelagic state’s total jurisdiction is mostly water. Those are answers to a maritime question. Against Taiwan’s 36,197.3371 km² of administrative land, only the land figure is a like-for-like comparison, and it gives about 52 times.

Which population: a 2025 survey, three years after the area

The 284,670,000 is the result of the 2025 Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS 2025), enumerated in June–July 2025 and confirmed by BPS in its May 2026 economic release, which also states that 55.65% of the population lives on Java. It is a survey count, not a civil-registration total, and the mid-2025 date shown is the survey’s reference convention rather than an official calendar day. Area and population are therefore about three years apart, and the density printed here divides a 2025 count by a 2022 area.

That Java share is the single most important fact for reading the density. More than half the country lives on an island that is well under a tenth of its land, so Java’s own density is far above Taiwan’s while Kalimantan and Papua, which hold most of the land, are sparsely settled. The national 150 per km² is arithmetically correct and describes no actual place.

Islands, provinces and cities are different units

Indonesian statistics are tabulated by province, regency and district, not by island. Java the island contains several provinces; Borneo is shared with Malaysia and Brunei and only Kalimantan is Indonesian; New Guinea is shared with Papua New Guinea. A figure for an island is never a figure for a province on it, and vice versa. Bali Province, listed separately on this site, is about 0.3% of the national land and 1.6% of the population and should not stand in for the country.

City populations are the usual trap. Jakarta can be counted as the administrative special capital region, as a contiguous built-up area, or as the Jabodetabek commuting region, and the three differ by many millions; Surabaya, Bandung and Medan have the same problem. This site does not publish a mixed-scope city ranking for that reason.

Outline, centroid and time zone

The outline is Natural Earth’s admin-0 Indonesia feature, land only, drawn from Sumatra to Papua; its projected area is within about 0.5% of the official land figure, so no island of any size is missing or replaced by sea. The centroid used for straight-line distance is Natural Earth’s label point, which sits on Sumatra near the equator rather than at the geographic middle of the archipelago. The country spans three standard time zones, WIB (UTC+7), WITA (UTC+8) and WIT (UTC+9); the offset used on this site is Jakarta’s WIB, so Bali has no time difference with Taiwan and Papua is one hour ahead.
