Outline of Macao
The outline is fitted to this frame, not a map for measuring distances. Outlying islands may make the main landmass appear smaller.

Scope and definitions

Total land area of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the sum of seven official components: Macao Peninsula 9.4, Taipa 7.9, Coloane 7.6, the Cotai reclamation 6.1, New Urban Zone A 1.4, New Urban Zone C 0.3 and the Macao port area on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge island 0.7. The University of Macau's Hengqin campus (1.0 km²) is a separate column in the same official table and is not included, nor is the 85 km² of sea area assigned to the region. Population is the Statistics and Census Service estimate of usual residents, which includes non-resident workers and students. Both figures share a 30 June 2026 reference point. The outline omits the newest reclaimed zones, so it should be read as a silhouette rather than a current coastline.

Average administrative density does not describe population distribution in every neighborhood. Compare population definitions and reference dates alongside the numbers.

How should this Macao profile be read?

The 33.4 km² on this page is not a single published total. It is the exact sum of seven official components, and it moves: the previous year’s figure was 33.3 km².

The seven components in the sum

The components are Macao Peninsula 9.4, Taipa 7.9, Coloane 7.6, the Cotai reclamation 6.1, New Urban Zone A 1.4, New Urban Zone C 0.3 and the Macao port area on the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge island 0.7. They are read from one official table and add up to 33.4 km² as at 2026-06-30.

The same table carries the University of Macau’s Hengqin campus as a separate column of 1.0 km², which is excluded here, as is the 85 km² of sea area assigned to the region. Because the total was 33.3 km² a year earlier, an undated Macao area figure goes stale quickly.

One reference date for both figures

Population is 686,500 as at 2026-06-30, the usual-resident estimate, which includes non-resident workers and students. Area and population therefore share a single reference date, which is uncommon in this dataset.

Density of about 20,550 people per km² follows by division rather than being published as such. It inherits both definitions above, so it should travel with the date and with the note on who the resident estimate includes.
