Scope and definitions

Gyeonggi Province's full administrative territory: the 31 cities and counties that ring Seoul. Seoul and Incheon are separate top-level governments and are not included — Seoul appears as a hole in the outline — so this is not the Seoul Capital Area (Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi together). Population is resident registration population (주민등록인구) at 2025-12-31 and area is the official administrative-area figure at the same date, both from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety annual report already used for Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan and Sejong — a different population series from the Statistics Korea register-based census (등록센서스) behind the South Korea and Seoul pages, though the two are usually close. The outline is GADM 4.1's Gyeonggi-do polygon, which measures about 10,189 km² against the official 10,207.70 km² (−0.2%). GADM is licensed for non-commercial use only; Atlas is not commercialised. How should this Gyeonggi Province profile be read?

Gyeonggi Province covers 10,207.70 km² and had 13,730,135 registered residents at year-end 2025, about 1,345 people per km² — more people than any other Korean province or city, Seoul included. Much of what visitors think of as greater Seoul, such as Suwon, Seongnam, Goyang and Yongin, is Gyeonggi.

The province is not the capital area

The figures on this page are the province alone. In the same ministry report, adding Seoul (605.25 km², 9,299,548 people) and Incheon (1,069.56 km², 3,051,961) gives about 11,883 km² and 26.1 million people — roughly half of South Korea's registered population on about an eighth of its land.

Gyeonggi is also a rung on this site's Korean reference ladder: on Korean-language pages, places of around ten thousand square kilometres are measured as a multiple of Gyeonggi rather than of a Taiwanese county.
