Scope and definitions

Area is the physical Koh Chang island in Trat Province (212.404 km²), as listed in the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources island inventory. Population is the 2024 registered population of Ko Chang District (8,728), the two subdistricts Ko Chang and Ko Chang Tai, which also include 30 much smaller islets around the main island, so density is a close approximation. The 154.8 km² given as the district's administrative area in the same provincial statistical report is not the island's land area (it is smaller than the island itself) and is not used. Not the Ko Chang in Ranong Province.

Average administrative density does not describe population distribution in every neighborhood. Compare population definitions and reference dates alongside the numbers.

Place guide

How should this Koh Chang profile be read?

Koh Chang is the largest island in Trat Province, in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border. Its physical area is 212.4 km², a little smaller than Koh Samui (227 km²) and larger than Koh Pha-ngan (168 km²), and the district it belongs to had 8,728 registered residents at the end of 2024.

Two area figures for the same place

The island itself is 212.404 km² in the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources inventory, and OpenStreetMap's island outline measures 209.9 km², within 1.2% of it. That is the area used here.

The provincial statistical report lists Ko Chang District at 154.8 km², smaller than the island it is named for. The report does not say what that figure measures, and it cannot be the island's own area, so Atlas does not use it.

What the population covers

The 8,728 residents are the district's registered population: the two subdistricts Ko Chang and Ko Chang Tai, which also include 30 smaller islands, none larger than 3.8 km². Density is therefore a close approximation for the main island.

Registered residents are not everyone present: visitors and temporary workers are not counted, so density describes residents rather than tourist-season crowds. This page is the Ko Chang in Trat, not the Ko Chang in Ranong Province on the Andaman Sea.
