How should this Xiaoliuqiu profile be read?
Xiaoliuqiu covers 6.8018 km² and had 12,076 registered residents at year-end 2025, about 1,775 people per km². It is the smallest place on this site and the densest of Taiwan’s offshore islands — denser, on this average, than several Taiwanese counties.
The only coral island in this dataset
Xiaoliuqiu is an uplifted coral limestone platform, unlike every other Taiwanese island on this site: Green Island and Orchid Island are volcanic, Penghu is basalt, Taiwan Main Island is continental. Its highest point is around 87 m and the surface is a gently tilted plateau, so almost the whole 6.8 km² is buildable ground. That is why an island smaller than Green Island supports nearly three times as many residents.
Access compounds the effect. The crossing from Donggang in Pingtung takes about 25 minutes, which puts the island inside a day trip from Kaohsiung. Green Island is about 33 km out in the open Pacific and its ferries are weather-dependent. Land area explains part of the density gap; the other part is that one island is easy to reach and the other is not.
One table, one date, and the township is the island
Both figures are the Liuqiu Township row of the Ministry of the Interior’s year-end 2025 township table, the same source and the same reference date as the Taiwan reference ladder and as the Orchid Island entry. The density computed here, about 1,775.4 per km², reproduces the ministry’s own density column exactly.
Liuqiu Township contains no outlying islands of any size, so the administrative unit, the geographic island and the drawn outline are one object. The OpenStreetMap island polygon used for the outline measures about 6.93 km² against the official 6.8018, a difference of roughly 2% that comes from tracing a coastline rather than a cadastral boundary. On this site that alignment is uncommon enough to be worth stating: most island pages here have to disclose a scope gap, and this one does not.
Residents are not the people on the island
Xiaoliuqiu is the most visited of Taiwan’s offshore islands, and in season the daytime population runs well above the 12,076 registered residents. Household registration records where people are registered, not where they sleep, and it counts no visitors at all. The density on this page is therefore a floor for how crowded the island feels, not a description of it.
The reference ladder on this site already used Xiaoliuqiu as its smallest rung, because 6.8 km² is a size Taiwanese readers can picture. Now that it is also a place with a page, the ladder links here instead of marking it as a yardstick with nothing behind it.
